Colloquium: Hadron Spectroscopy from QCD

Abstract:
The plethora of hadrons observed in scattering experiments long ago motivated a search to find some underlying structure to describe the richness. The idea of Quantum Chromodynamics - the interactions of quarks and gluons - was developed to explain the spectrum. However, the observed spectrum of hadrons is considered incomplete, motivating many new experimental searches. The glue is one of the most notable features of QCD, yet it is not clear how it should manifest itself in the spectrum. This colloquium will describe how QCD is a strong interaction problem, requiring non-perturbative methods to solve, and highlight some of the consequences that are relevant for experiment
